After a post-exam, post-grad week off, Abilities Training classes pick up again on Monday.

And of course any students going on vacation during the summer, be it for a weekend or a week or more, make sure you let the appropriate people know. If you haven't already. I see they Headmasters have quite a list of vacations already.

A notice to all students--

As of today, we have a nurse working for us at Zener. Yes, we do have two healers, but they are students and while they can heal your cuts and scrapes, they don't have extensive medical knowledge and there are some things they're not yet trained to handle. And Nicholas will be graduating come June and Kirsten cannot be expected to take care of everything.

So, everyone should welcome Hannon Raleigh to our staff. He'll be set up in his office today. You can go to him for any medical need - injury, illness, or if you have questions about anything of a medical nature.

All those students with medical needs can now see Mr. Raleigh when situation requires. All medical information is being passed along to him.

I hope everyone is enjoying their impromptu day off.

When classes resume tomorrow we obviously will not be able to get into my classroom. So we'll be using different classrooms for the next couple weeks, based on what's free at the time.

English 9 will be held in Mr. Crawford's room.
English 10 will be held in Ms. Carter's room.
English 11 will be held in Mr. Renaud's room.
English 12 will be held in Miss Foster's room.

All during normal English class times, of course.

Grammar lesson of the day: the difference between 'good' and 'well'.

Good is an adjective used to describe nouns or pronouns. Well is an adverb, used to describe verbs. When it comes to verbs, good is only used with sense verbs (ie. 'that smells good'). Well is only an adjective when it's used to mean 'healthy'.

So remember: Superman does good, you do well.

The time has come to start planning for this years Spring Fling week, which will take place the first week of May (May 4-8 to be exact). It's always a big hit and we'd like this years to be just as good, of course.

If anyone has any ideas for events they'd like to see, let me or one of the other teachers know. No guarentees of course. It has to be feasible. And reasonable. So far we have the Tug-of-War, the Pie Throwing Booth (Mr. Crawford had way too much fun with that last year), the Dunk Tank, the Mock Jail, the Face Painting Booth, the Fish Pond and Ring Toss on the docket for the carnival events. There will be candy grams that week, and of course the Spring Fling Dance.

As is always the case, any money raised (beyond what's needed to cover costs) will be donated to the North Conway Food Bank.

Staff, you'll all have to sign up for one or two things. The sign up sheet will be going up in the staff room once we have things finalized.

Suggestions as they come in:
- Old time photo booth (Paige)
- Kissing booth (Morgan)

This egg project never fails to amuse. I've stopped a number of sophomore and freshman this morning, and already I've found three who had no idea where their eggs were! I am taking names, students, as are all staff members!

I also had some very nice scrambled eggs with dill this morning. Mrs. Yates has a sense of humour.

Also, Justin Montgomery-Andrews, I hear you've been stealing eggs. So come see me for detention. If your chicken needs to sit on something, I think there are some plastic Easter eggs lying around somewhere.

It's a very good thing that we arrived back yesterday, or else getting back across the boarder might have become difficult.

I was going to speak on how nice Montreal and Quebec City were (and they are quite nice), but now doesn't seem the time for that.

We (the staff) realize that many students are probably gett phone calls from parents and guardians. Remind them of the Zener-parent message board that Mr. Shaw has set up. He's working right now to put up all the information that we have, which includes assurations that the school is currently under no threat. Parents are also free to call the switch board; our lovely receptionist had come in on her day off and will be directing calls to the Headmasters, as well as several of us staff members who have volunteered to be phone-ready.

And my English 9 students can have one thing to be pleased about. I was going to have a pop quiz first thing tomorrow. Instead we'll be having an assembly.

Arthur Lloyd - in the future, please remember that, unless you are in your room, pants of some sort (or shorts, or even a skirt if that pleases you) are not an option, but a requirement.

Ms. Lloyd and Mr. Brandon, report to the in-school suspension room tomorrow at 8am.

Ms. Lloyd, a letter is being sent home to your parents about your behaviour.

Also, all students be aware that those constantly breaking rules and amassing detentions and suspensions will lose priviledges to leave campus during March break.

Don't say you weren't warned.

This week we're going to be studying advertisements in all English classes, as part of the Media Literacy Unit.

So, students, bring in some advertisements. Ones you think are really effective, or humourous, or ones you just don't get. We'll analyze them.

These can be print ads (from magazines and newspapers), voice ads (from radio programs -- bring these on CD) or video ads (from television or online - bring these on disc or a jump drive).

I'll be bringing in a collection of ads from different countries so that we can compare how advertisements are used in different parts of the world - and what is acceptable in advertisements in different parts of the world.

Ronald, you're going to be starting The Giver by Lois Lowry this week. I'll give you a copy of it when I see you.

Just a little note for the student body - fanfiction does not count as a paper.

I'm thinking that someone made a mistake when they passed in a copy of their Twilight fanfiction instead of their paper for class. Not naming any names, of course.

Mr. He, I've been asked to speak with you. As tempting as it might sometimes seem, we don't immobilize our students here.

Nor do we video tape them without consent.

All English exams are marked and will be handed back today or tomorrow.

While marking, I noticed a number of common grammar and spelling errors. These come up time and again on tests, in papers, and in general writing. So take note!

1. Your vs. You're
Your is a posessive pronoun. For example, "That is your sandwich."
You're is a contraction of "you are".

2. Loose vs Lose.
Loose is an adjective that describes something that is not tight or free from restraints or a verb that means to free something.
Lose means to misplace or be unable to find.

3. Its vs It's
Its is a possessive pronoun.
It's is a contraction of "it is".

4. i.e. vs e.g.
i.e. means 'that is' or 'in other words'.
e.g. means "for example".

I'll be spending the weekend marking exams. I hope to have all English exams marked by Monday. So you will all get your marks then, as well as your Term One final marks.

On Monday all classes will be starting a Media Literacy unit. Freshman and Sophomore English will begin by discussing the topic of Media Literacy and understanding what it is, but the Juniors and Seniors will be jumping right into the unit.

As I'm sure many of you have noticed, the arctic front reached New Hampshire overnight. I just want to remind everyone to use caution when going outside into to cold, and would suggest staying in if possible. If you do have to go out, bundle up. Frostbite is not fun.
